The phrase "meteoric rise to fame" might have been coined especially for Bastian Schweinsteiger. Just two years ago, only intensely close observers of the youth football scene had heard the player's name, but now he is talked about all over Europe. "I don't think I'm getting too big for my boots, but you have to believe in yourself to survive at Bayern," the youngster said a year ago, and promptly clocked up 26 Bundesliga appearances in 2003-4, his first full season as a pro after emerging from the junior ranks at the club. To cap it all, he was promoted to the senior international side and made a refreshingly spontaneous contribution to Germany's otherwise lacklustre Euro 2004 in Portugal.
