Apart from Andreas Ottl, Philipp Lahm is the only Munich-born player currently in the senior squad. Lahm spent eight years learning the trade with the 'junior team' youth section and the reserves before a spectacular senior breakthrough during a two-year loan spell with VfB Stuttgart, completing a stellar ascent by earning a place in the Germany team. "Even I never dreamed this would happen," the two-footed left-back confessed. However, even in his brief career to date, Lahm has experienced a couple of lows to balance the highs. After a stress fracture in January 2005, he sustained torn cruciate ligaments in May of the same year. Now back in Munich and reunited with ex-Stuttgart coach Felix Magath, Lahm is determined to recover his previous best. The youngster, who featured at EURO 2004, stunned his former and current boss at VfB by powering through even the most rigorous training routines, causing the chief to ask himself: "Am I suddenly doing something wrong?"
