PROFILE
Combative former France international signed from Real Madrid to bolster the midfield. A talented player in the mould of compatriot Patrick Vieira, he has skill in abundance and the strength to command the middle of the park. Won the French league title with Nantes and helped them reach the Champions League semi-final in 1996 before moving to Spain and Celta Vigo. Transferred to Madrid in 2000 and, during a highly-successful three years, he helped the Spanish giants claim the league title twice and the Champions League.
