PROFILE
Sir Alex Ferguson called the Portugal winger 'one of the most exciting young players I've ever seen' on signing him in a £12.24million deal in August 2003. The prodigiously gifted forward, comfortable on either wing or up front, made his name with Sporting Lisbon, before earning a worldwide reputation after some sparkling performances within the Portuguese national set-up. He has been compared to Luis Figo, another ex-Sporting star, and is the first Portuguese player to play for United. Scored his first Premier League goal with a free-kick in the 3-0 win over Portsmouth at Old Trafford in November 2003. Also impressed in Portugal's run to the Euro 2004 final and 2006 World Cup semi-finals.
