Hailed as 'the best goalkeeper in Spain' by Rafael Benitez following his arrival at Anfield from Villarreal in July 2005. A former Spain Under-21 international, Reina began his career with Barcelona and made his debut for the Catalan side at the age of 18. Played against Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup semi-final. The son of famed Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Miguel Reina, Jose joined Villarreal on loan in 2002 before the switch became permanent in 2004. Helped Villarreal finish in a Champions League place in May 2005 before sealing move to England. Made his Reds debut in the Champions League qualifier against TNS in July 2005.
